Sonar & CCTV Survey

MMP utilises a Blue Robotics BlueROV2 for our underwater ROV inspections. Our high-performance underwater ROV “Deep Six” is outfitted in an eight-thruster vectored configuration, providing increased thrust and a full six-degrees-of-freedom across XYZ axis for increased movement control within tunnels. While standard BlueROV2’s have a maximum range of 300m, MMP’s ROV technicians have converted the ROV to utilise a fibre optic tether, extending our range to ~1000m; an unprecedented distance for this size class in British underwater ROV inspection. Our fibre optic conversion also ensures there is no chance of signal delay or loss. Our ROV comes armed with Live CCTV, GPS location logging, obstacle avoidance scanning SONAR, tether distance counter, and a modular design.

“Deep Six” was deployed from a roof access hatch in 2023 to survey a 551metre continuous section of tunnel of the Spine Tunnel Break Pressure tank in Edmonton. Operating live CCTV footage and scanning SONAR provided our client with the ability to visually inspect tunnel conditions in-situ as well as identify silt/mussel growth within the pipe by comparing tunnel diameter with SONAR measurements. Deformations and damage was able to be observed and exact distances logged using the tether counter, giving accurate locations for the client’s use in the future.

Overall, MMP’s survey provided full CCTV footage and SONAR profiling for the entire 551 metre length of the tunnel, identifying various areas of 600mm depth silt and mussel growth and heavy marine growth observed throughout. The findings of this survey allowed the client to determine a zero datum of zebra mussel population present in the pipe prior to the administration of an experimental bio-bullet targeting zebra mussels. MMP has been asked to return to survey again to identify the efficacy of this bio-bullet.
